Alzheimer’s disease: Beware of the Symptoms

February 21, 2010

The symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease are apparently nondescript. But the silver lining is that for the perceptive person this knowledge can go a long way in ameliorating the woes of the patient.

COMMON INITIAL SYMPTOMS OF ALZHEIMER’S DISEASE

The people suffering from Alzheimer’s disease start losing their confidence and opt to move into their cocoons.

Unnatural fear about imaginary things keeps on haunting them.

They feel insecure while alone.

Alzheimer’s patients misplace things more often than normal persons.

Such persons tend to forget commonplace data. This is especially true with regards to ordinary items like pens or keys and also days and dates.

ALOIS ALZHEIMER’S CONTRIBUTIONS & MYTHS ABOUT ‘PRESENILE DEMENTIA’

Alzheimer’s disease was known as presenile dementia prior to 1960 when German psychologist Alois Alzheimer brought out his extensive studies on ‘presenile dementia’. In recognition, presenile dementia was rechristened ‘Alzheimer’s disease’.

Alois succeeded in not only blasting certain myths connected with the brain disorder but in also providing new insights into the causes of Alzheimer’s disease. As a result, Alois’ studies set on motion a renewed endeavor among the medical scientists to find out various aspects about this major brain disease.

Hitherto, one of the myths was that presenile dementia attacked only the youth.

The other myth was that incidences of Alzheimer’s disease were more among people in the 30-45-age group.

Another myth was that it occurred rarely.

Blasting these popular myths, Alois established that Alzheimer’s disease affects not just the youth but also the elderly.

Alois studies further demonstrated that it is generally more prominent among the octogenarian people.

He further showed that even sexagenarians are prone to Alzheimer’s disease.

The 1960 studies of Alois added that Alzheimer’s disease attacks the youth; but it happens rarely.

Subsequent advanced analyses into the causes of Alzheimer’s disease have followed the seminal research of Alois.

Studies are on to find out the links among Alzheimer’s disease and dietary habits as well as between Alzheimer’s disease and ecological factors.

ECOLOGICAL FACTORS & ALZHEIMER’S DISEASE

Ecological factors have also been under the scanner as possible agents causing Alzheimer’s disease. Studies are still on as to the probable connection between the brain disorder and presence of aluminum in the environment. It has been surmised that too much aluminum in the brain can cause Alzheimer’s disease. However, no plausible connection has been pinpointed.

Researches are on also into probable links between Alzheimer’s disease and exposure of the patient to zinc in the environment or in the food that they consume. Some medical scientists are carrying on studies into the probable links of the brain disorder with food poisoning and even viral agents.
